TAJIKISTAN, South West Khatlon Oblast.
£10,000.
Food Security Programme - to improve the food supply of 1,000 vulnerable households, 3 orphanages and schools throughout 25 villages. The project will provide increased food crop production in drought-affected areas, by the funding and maintenance of 6,900 fruit and nut trees and/or vines. 12,100 people living in the districts of Kabodian, Pyanj, Shaartuz and Bashkent, will benefit from this long-term source of food.
These areas of Tajikistan were severely affected by drought (1999 and 2000), which followed the civil war. Repatriated refugees and relocated persons (survivors of natural disasters/landslides etc.), live in and around 25 villages that have been newly created or reconstructed. The schools have been rebuilt.
Produce from the fruit and nut trees will increase the diversity of meals and provide essential vitamins, proteins and fats to those who are at threat from chronic malnutrition. The schools and orphanages will be able to provide snacks or lunch to the children.
This food programme will help reduce the dependancy on external food aid and will decrease dependance on outside assistance in the long-term.
Financed through ACTION AGAINST HUNGER (London, UK).
