Food Distribution Programme. Provision of maize to vulnerable and impoverished families.

Maize is the staple food in Malawi. A severe dry spell during the growing season, earlier in 2005, resulted in failed crops and severely affected maize yields. This led to one of the most serous food crises in recent history.

Households will run out of food until the next maize harvest, in April 2006. More than 4 million people require humanitarian food aid.

Food insecurity in Malawi, leads to inappropriate coping strategies, such as: depletion of forestry through the sale of firewood; eating roots/tubers and unripe foods; selling personal possessions and increased crime levels.          This contribution towards a vital, much greater distribution of maize will help to avert chronic malnutrition.
