Niger is the second poorest country in the world, with a high under-5 mortality rate. 85% of the population are subsistence farmers - dependant on rain fed agriculture.

In 2004, locust infestations and poor rainfall devastated the harvest - resulting in desolated farms of grey, hot sand. This has led to severely depleted household stocks of food (Niger was the worst hit of all the West African countries).

In these districts of Niger, there are high rates of malnutrition among children under 5 years of age - 800,000 children are malnourished. 3.6 million people are in need of food.

The aim of this feeding programme is to immediately and sustainably reduce morbidity and malnutrition, by rapidly meeting the critical nutritional needs of vulnerable families.

Funding for this project will provide 7 metric tonnes of UNIMIX/Corn Soya blend, for supplementary feeding, which will support children under 5 years of age and their families.

Financed through CONCERN WORLDWIDE (London, UK).
