SUDAN
West Darfur, Saleia/Kulbus.
£3,000.
Water project - funds for one hand dug well and the rehabilitation of one hand pump.
Displaced persons who fled their homes during the conflict in Darfur,
are now having to live in camps and communities. They are in desperate
need of food and water supplies.
For many people in Darfur, water that is contaminated with bacteria is lethal. Water bourne disease is very high. Less than a third of the population has access to clean water.
Local communities in the Saleia/Kulbus area have identified water as
their most urgent need. Families in some settlements, have to travel up
to 6 hours per day for water; being then forced to wait for up to 4
hours to collect it.
A vegfam-financed well and rehabilitated hand pump, will provide a
safe, clean supply of water and will improve thousands of lives in this
area of Darfur. Water borne diseases within the community will be
reduced, by sustainably improving access to an increased quantity and
quality of water.

Mornei Locality, West Darfur.
£3,000.
Livelihoods Programme - provision of seeds and tools.
Internally displaced people fled their homes, during the conflict in
Darfur. Villages were looted and burned, water sources were
contaminated and fields destroyed. People have been living in camps for
up to 2 years. There is an urgent need of food provision.
Some families are returning home in safe areas, returning to their
fields to plant crops, others are only returning to their fields
during the day - remaining in camps at night.
The Livelihoods Programme will enable families to grow enough food for
themselves and others and it will provide a sustainable income. Farmers
will be supplied with vegetable seeds and tools. Tree seedlings will
also be planted in the communities. In addition to this, Nutrition
Gardens will be set up in the camps.
The harvest in 2006 will provide daily meals and grain banks will be
established, to enable seeds to be stored for the next season's
planting. The larger project will include practical training and
support for the displaced people to adopt independant living and reduce
the dependancy on aid.
HIV/AIDS awareness training will also be given. Vegfam funding for seeds and tools will benefit almost 700 families.
