ZAMBIA, Kitwe.

£1,500.

Support of Feeding Centres for HIV/AIDS affected orphaned children - supplying organic beans and maize meal.
HIV/AIDS has led to a humanitarian crisis in Zambia.

Increased mortality rates and undermined coping levels, reduces householders' capacities to produce and purchase food. HIV-affected orphans, coping on their own, face great risks of malnutrition and illness. Without access to medical treatment, a nutritionally balanced diet is crucial in boosting the immune systems and prolonging the lives of these orphaned children.

The funding for this project will provide a nutritious meal for orphans (under the age of 7 years), in 28 centres, as part of a larger project. This project would not have continued without Vegfam funding.

Financed through ACTION AGAINST HUNGER (London, UK), working with Children In Distress Kitwe (CINDI).

£3,000.
Vegetable Gardening at Maposa Farm - funds for seeds and tools.

The aim of this project is to grow food, for 28 Feeding Centres for HIV/AIDS Orphans; expanding in the long term, to become a self-sustaining enterprise that will be income generating, through selling vegetables at local markets.

Crops grown will include: common beans, cabbages, green peppers, maize, okra, onions, soya beans and tomatoes.
Vegfam funding will provide seeds and tools and will expand the area of land that is being currently cultivated. The existing irrigation system will be upgraded and expanded, which will substantially increase yields.

£1,000.
Community Vegetable Gardens - Household Food Security Programme, for 400 households.

Vegetable gardening has been identified by the community, as one of the most appropriate income generating activities. It will strengthen food security and solidarity, amongst people  who are living with and caring for people with HIV/AIDS.

Seeds and tools will be distributed to 100 households per year. Training will be given in appropriate techniques, such as conservation farming. Parents of single and older orphans will participate in the project.

Vegetables that will be grown will include: cabbages, rape (spinach-like vegetable), pumpkin leaves and tomatoes. Produce will supplement the diet of the orphans at the feeding centres and will also be sold at local markets - producing an income that will cover further project development costs.
