Livelihood Rehabilitation Programme in Earthquake affected Siran Valley and Manshera Districts. Provision of seeds, tools and fruit trees for kitchen gardens.

As a result of the Earthquake in October 2005, approximately 750,000 people were severely injured,  800,000 people died and 2.8 million were left without shelter. Whilst there was an initial rapid response to the disaster, the longer term help that is needed has not been forthcoming as public donations have dwindled. This has meant that there is a huge shortage of longer term, sustainable solutions to the catastrophe.

Many thousands of displaced persons are still living in terrible conditions, in temporary shelters and tents, with no compensation or financial assistance in sight. Pakistan now has the largest number of Internally Displaced Persons in the world. Many areas are still affected by landslides and are without roads, any form of basic infrastructure, water supplies or sanitation.

Before the earthquake, communities largely depended on subsistence agriculture to feed their families but land is not now suitable for cultivation and stored seeds were either lost in debris or consumed as food.
Kitchen gardens and fruit trees were destroyed - removing the provision of household food, income generation and local exchange mechanisms.

Around 50% of the men have been unable to work as a result of the earthquake. The funding that has been provided by Vegfam will be used to provide people with seeds to grow maize, vegetables and wheat. Basic agricultural tools will be supplied and fruit trees will be planted (providing food and containing adverse impacts of future landslides).

All agricultural methods used will build on awareness of environmental conservation and the sustainable use of natural resources. This project is part of a much larger programme. It will aim to restore livelihoods to people who are still recovering, after the trauma of the earthquake.

Beneficiaries will include: homeless/shelterless displaced families, the elderly, people who are living in camps and families who are headed by disabled persons. 900 persons will be supplied with kitchen garden inputs of seeds and tools.

Financed through CONCERN WORLDWIDE (London, UK) in partnership with HAASHAR Association and the Rural Development Project (Pakistan).

£5,000.
Rehabilitation of a Gravity Water Supply Scheme in Earthquake Affected Siran Valley District.

During the earthquake, 80 - 90% of the villages' fresh water springs were destroyed (80% of all other facilities and infrastructure were also destroyed).

Villages have been rendered inaccessible. Drinking water is scarce and difficult to collect. Reconstructing/rehabilitating this water supply will benefit approximately 800 persons.

Training and backup support for the operation and maintenance of the water supply will be provided as part of the project.
