£8,500.
Vegan-Organic Farming Food Security Project.
Finance for organic seeds and initial compost, tools, storage facilities and training for HIV affected vulnerable households.
Less that 12% of the world's population live in Sub Saharan africa, yet
this region has more 60% of all people with HIV/AIDS living there. This
has resulted in life expectancy decreasing from 60 years to 37 years.
The project area has the highest HIV prevalence rate in the country;
approximately 1 in 4 people are HIV positive and there are 875,000
orphans. The effect of this is households going deeper into poverty -
income generating capacity is affected and livelihoods are compromised.
The possibility of producing and purchasing food is reduced.
Governments are overwhelmed by the scale of the crisis and they are unable to provide adequate care and facilities.
Orphans are left to fend for themselves. They are often suffering from
the effects of illness, abuse, sexual exploitation and the
discrimination that is associated with AIDS.
A nutritionally balanced diet is crucial to people who have HIV/AIDS; prolonging the length and quality of their lives.
This vegan-organic Food Security Project will provide training in:
organic farming techniques, agronomy, composting, food processing,
storage, business and marketing.
A demonstration plot will be set up. Each beneficiary group (women and
young people), will be provided with vegetable and fruit seeds/plants
(avocado, beans, carrots, cow peas, ground nuts, papaya, rape,
strawberry). Medicinal plants will also be provided (amaranthus,
garlic, ginger and turmeric).
They will also receive a basic set of agricultural tools.
The project will benefit more than 1,000 people (200 households) -
dietary diversity will be increased, food security maintained and
income will be brought into the households through the sale of
vegetables.
Financed through ACTION AGAINST HUNGER (London, UK), working with the local partner CINDI (Children In Distress-Kitwe).
